Necessity is the mother of invention: Emdat innovation fills a void in the healthcare industry
Searching for an integrated dictation and transcription system is nothing new to the founders of Emdat. Steve Palmisano, Kevin Saliga and Jeff Olver had all experienced the struggles of implementing disparate documentation solutions, each associated with duplicative costs for implementation, service, support and training.
In the mid-1990s, when Steve was the CIO for a large multi-specialty group, he was disappointed by the group's dictation and transcription services. His staff set out to find a solution that incorporated dictation, transcription and a repository that enabled clinicians to view transcriptions online for anytime, anywhere access. This search proved fruitless — no such solution existed in the healthcare industry at the time.
In 1998, when Steve met Jeff and Kevin, both professionals in the healthcare industry, they discussed the idea of creating an integrated dictation and transcription system that housed all information on secure servers for easy 24-hour access by clinicians. Over the next year, the three founders developed Emdat, enabling medical facilities to purchase one system that fulfilled all of their dictation and transcription needs. With this one solution, clinicians can dictate, sign and access their dictation and transcriptions securely online, anytime.
Keeping in mind their experiences as healthcare professionals, the founders have continued to maintain four essential principles as Emdat continues to gain momentum in the industry:
- No upfront costs
- No maintenance fees
- Choice of transcription company that best fits a facility's needs
- No complicated instructions or exhaustive training required — user-friendly and intuitive is a must
Our Vision
As Information Technology Officers at leading medical facilities, Emdat's founders struggled with the antiquated, costly and time intensive dictation/transcription process. The time had come to create a new standard in managing medical documentation services. A standard that would be efficient, reliable, secure and accessible 24/7 to all members of a medical team: administrators, physicians and nurses. A standard that would give medical facilities the flexibility to change documentation companies without having to start from square one. A standard that would provide complete connectivity and integration that would bring the disparate technological capabilities and needs of medical facilities and documentation service providers together. A standard that would become Emdat.
